Earlier in 2020, Big Time Gaming had us on the edge of the seats as they introduced us to the first games to use their never seen before engine Megaclusters. Star Clusters and Cyberslot introduced us to a different mechanical approach, using a superbly mathematical system to take traditional cluster pays slots to the next level in entertainment.
It was safe to say the two games received mixed reviews across the iGaming community, as players got to grips with Big Time Gaming slots that took a completely different approach to the Megaways predecessors, which have proven to be a huge success over the past few years.
Like any other new idea, it can take time to really unlock the potential of a mechanic, using feedback from the community. As well as this, its not abnormal for slot providers to collaborate in order to take a concept and really create something special. Recently, Big Time Gaming struck a licensing deal with Relax Gaming, one of the most reputable casino product providers in the industry. With a back catalogue of hugely successful originals such as Temple Tumble Megaways, Snake Arena and most recently Money Train 2, Relax have established themselves as one of the biggest and most trusted names in the gaming community.
Licensing has lead the team at Relax to act quickly and creatively, taking the Megaclusters Mechanic and putting their own familiar stamp on it, through the release of Krystal Kluster Megaclusters.
Kluster Krystals is a 5×5 Cluster pays slot, laid out on an Aztec Style frame, with a night-time jungle style background. The slot features familiar Relax Gaming elements, the Aztec frame reminding us of Temple Tumble Megaways whilst the win font has a similar look to previous releases. On the main board, rather than the Space/Sci-fi symbols used by BTG on Star Clusters and Cyberslot, Relax have opted for a Tetris style collection of gems. These gems act in a similar way to the popular 80s game, which is discussed in detail later in our review.
The soundtrack provides a relaxed feel, rather than an intense up-beat track found in other slot games. On this occasion, it feels as though a slightly mellow track was needed to set the scene and matches the background the game is set upon.
As we mentioned previously, the symbols in Krystal Klusters Megaclusters are made up of a mixture of different colour Aztec Style jewels. A connection of 5 symbols in a cluster are required to to create a winning connection. Connections pay depending on the value of the symbol, with the lowest value green jewel paying 0.3x for a 5 of kind cluster whilst clusters of 20 or more of the high value red jewel, will pay a very attractive 50x your bet.
Gameplay begins on Cyberslot Megaclusters™ with a 5×5 grid set between the two Aztec temple pillars mentioned previously. As soon as you begin to spin, multiple coloured jewels will fall from the top of the screen on to the screen. The first thing you are likely to notice, is the size of these jewels. jewels can fall in a cluster of one lone jewel, or can reach a maximum of 4 jewels per square. Each time a jewel hits a connection of 5+, an additional jewel is added to the square. New jewels will then avalanche from the top, falling in to place, if these gems re-connect with the biggest squares, the maximum base game wins can be reached.
Keep an eye out for the multiplying jewel that has been added to Krystal Klusters and can be found on any given spin. This jewel continues to multiply depending on the number of cluster connections within that spin. Interestingly, this feature feels very similar to Sweet Bonanza Megaways in the way that the final multiplier is added to the total win. So, if you are luck enough to hit multiple connections and build the multiplier high enough, the final tumble Win can be very rewarding. This feature is one that can help re-build your balance and adds a base game element that the previous Megaclusters releases may have been missing. .
As well as the Multiplying gem, a side feature can be activated in the base game through multiple hits. Along the bottom of the grid, a bar which contains 6 golden jewel is seen. Each cluster connection on the board will light up a golden jewel, if 6 connections are made, one of 3 features will be activated.
If the Krystal Kut feature is activated, similar to a demolition feature seen in Reactoonz, this will remove particular jewels from the screen however, this will only be Single Jewels that are in play. If the jewels which drop from the top of the screen fall your way, huge clusters can be achieved again reaching maximum pay potentials, this is even more adrenaline pumping if a wild multiplier is in play at this time.
Krystal Vanish is similar to kut, however this removes an entire colour, no matter how many jewels are present in this group, meaning a higher value colour may drop in to play.
Krystal Boost will upgrade groups of symbols to the next stage, if these symbols connect, the pay-out has now increased from the previous stage.
The bonus feature in Kluster Krystals takes all of the base game features but enhances their potential. To activate the bonus round, a fully lit bonus symbol is required. You will see the bonus symbol fall on to the grid within any given spin, this can land with either one or 2 gems already lit. Each time a cluster connects with the bonus in the cluster, a new light is lit up. Once 4 lights are glowing, the bonus round will begin.
Once activated, the bonus will award you 7 free spins. Throughout the free spins feature, the side features can still be activated via 6 cluster connections but the real potential comes in to play via the multiplying jewels. Multiple gems can drop in to the grid at one time with each connection increasing each multiplier by 3x every time. If connections are made with multiple multipliers in play, big wins can be achieved.
Relax Gaming have certainly taken the Megaclusters mechanic and given it a new twist. Kluster Krystals creative side features and tetris style elements take another approach to BTGs releases whilst maintaining the mathematical elements and win potential.
There are takeaways from the game that we would certainly love to see in future releases, the idea of lighting a bonus symbol is interesting and gives the feeling that this slot is likely to bonus more regularly than Cyberslot. Free Spins are set at 7, meaning the chances of increasing the win potential through more spins (As seen in Star Clusters) is not there however if the free spins drop in your favour, there still appears to be great win potential here.
Overall, Relax Gaming have put together a very entertaining Megaclusters Slot that is likely to be played amongst the community. Side features and multiplying wilds have shown us that the Megaclusters mechanic is not a one trick pony. Megaways slots continued to change as they grew in popularity and Kluster Krystals has an exceptional look and feel, providing us with a glimpse in to the future of this exceptional series.
